SHOW & TELL
Throughout my Intro to Darkroom Photography and Basic Drawing Classes, I had the opportunity to show my art to classmates and to other art classes. I put together collections of photos for weekly critiques, often based on a theme or with the aim of telling a story. Some of these critiques are what inspired my current photo collections.
darkroom photography:
critique #2
For this critique, we were encouraged to put together photos that told a story. This was the initial inspiration for my “solitude” collection. When creating this, I was thinking about how people typically value having a companion, almost making us scared to be alone. As you go down the photos, you see caution tape which acts as a warning - like the anxiety we sometimes have about doing things alone. However, below the warning, you see the peace and content of people in solitude.
darkroom photography:
critique #4
I took some of these photos at Union theological Seminary, the MET, and a random train station in upstate NY. The main idea is that light is supposed to guide your eye up the photos and the photos progressively get lighter themselves as you move up. The aim was to communicate an idea of being guided by “the light,” a concept often mentioned in religions.
darkroom Photography:
final project
Initially, I wanted to make a commentary on how women and their bodies are viewed in American society. Mainly I wanted to speak on the expectation to bear children especially when people look at a woman’s “purpose” through a religious lens. However, I don’t think this idea completely came through in my photos. So overall...I am still in the process of figuring out what these photos signify when put together 🧐
